2019 is here - 2018 is over

2018 is over and as we prepare for the 2019 Season, here are some reflections on the last 12 months.

This time last year, we had come off another pretty disappointing season on the field, 3 consecutive  wooden spoons for 1st Grade, consecutive wooden spoons for Reserve Grade, Youth Grade did make the semi’s but were knocked out in the 1st week.

In the relegation to Community League position, in order to save our District League status for 2018, we had to prepare a strong written application to Football South Coast backed up by a meeting to present our case to the Men’s Football Council.

I am not sure where we would be now as a Club if relegation had occurred but we somehow survived the drop to Community League for a 2nd season.

So what did we achieve from the end of the 2017 season till now, some highlights

  • 1st year Coach Andrew Paine leads a new look 1st Grade team to 17 wins to finish 2nd and to the Preliminary Final

  • Coach Dan Hudson takes our Reserve Grade team to 2nd on the ladder

  • Our Yth Grade team coached for the 3rd year by Nathan Starr, but with many players graduating to the Senior Grades, makes the semi-finals again

  • An under 18’s team is formed for the 1st time in a few seasons with players from various teams including from our Junior Club, Russell Vale, also make the semi-finals

  • Overall Bellambi FC finishes 2nd in the Club Championship, 4 out of 4 teams making the semi-finals, something if it has happened before, has not happened for many years

  • Tim O’Brien named FSC 1st Grade Player of the Year

  • Lachlan Cole awarded Yth Grade Leading Goalscorer

  • Andrew Paine finishes runner up in District League Coach of the Year

  • Excellent disciplinary record for all grades

  • Agreement reached with Woonona-Bulli RSL to be a Major and Club Venue Sponsor

  • Return of Major Sponsor Recoup Contractor Debt Recovery, and other sponsors Towradgi Beach Hotel, Wollongong Service Company, Gelcon Fabrications, Woonona Tyres, Ziems Butchery, Kennards Hire, MACS

  • Bellambi FC awarded the Premier League Major Semi Final on the back of Elizabeth Park being one of the best suburban grounds, and our Club’s proven ability to host major fixtures

  • FSC Girls Conference League and SAP teams hosted at Elizabeth Park, a huge commitment for the Committee but a significant contributor to season revenue

  • Bellambi FC 2018 registrations are 100% self-registration, a significant milestone among FSC junior and senior clubs

  • A defibrillator is acquired by the Club, via a 50/50 grant with FSC and the support of some donations from some Bellambi FC members and others

  • Bellambi FC business plan is written covering goals and plans for Playing; Finances and Sponsorship; Culture and Community; Elizabeth Park Facility

  • Elizabeth Park ground licence extended for 10 years to 31 December 2027

  • Bellambi FC awarded $65,000 as a contribution to the cost of the New/Upgrade Lighting project at Elizabeth Park, Bellambi under the Community Building Partnerships (CBP) grants program. We are extremely grateful to our local State Member, Mr Ryan Park and Ms Jenelle Rimmer (our Local Wollongong City Council Councillor) for their advocacy on our behalf to receive this grant for the benefit of all users of the Park, including the Neighbourhood Centre, Healthy Cities Illawarra and the community.

Preparations are well underway for the 2019 season, with all Coaching Staff appointments made (1st – Andrew Paine, RG – Nathan Starr, YG – Brett Kear, U/18’s – Chris Hoswell) and with returning players and some new signings including the return of Scott Chipperfield to his Junior Club, we look forward to another successful season.

Happy New Year to all.

CBP Grant received by Bellambi FC

At the recent Community Building Partnerships (CBP) grants award ceremony, our local member, Mr Ryan Park announced that Bellambi FC was awarded $65,000 as a contribution to the cost of the New/Upgrade Lighting project at Elizabeth Park, Bellambi.

The grant awarded to Bellambi FC was the largest awarded in the Keira electorate for 2018 CBP (being more than double the next largest grant) and it represents we believe a significant endorsement by our local member, Ryan Park and the Grant adjudicators of the worthiness of the project.

We are extremely grateful to both Mr Ryan Park and Ms Jenelle Rimmer (our Local Wollongong City Council Councillor) for their support/advocacy on our behalf to receive this grant.

We believe that the lighting project is a very worthwhile initiative for our Club, WCC (as the ground owner), and the other community users in the Bellambi area.

-          it will rectify the current inferior/congested situation that exists for training, open up the full field and the other smaller field for training both improving training outcomes and safety, and evening out ground wear and tear.

-          given after hours training space is much sought after in the northern suburbs it should increase overall utilisation of the existing park area, which is also a good thing for the amenity of the area including the safety of users and residents.

-          there is an opportunity, with appropriate scoping of work, to create another ground in the WCC area that has capacity to hold matches under lights, further increasing ground availability and utilisation.

-          the project is supported by our affiliated Junior Club, Russell Vale JFC, Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre and Healthy Cities Illawarra (we collaborate with them via the Neighbourhood Centre to assist with their delivery of free physical activities for kids in the local area) who also want to expand their delivery of free physical activities to local adults at Elizabeth Park, with adequate lighting required.

We are currently in discussions with WCC following our lodgement of an application for grant funding under the 2018/19 Sports Planning process to enable the delivery of the project in full.

Round 3 v Berkeley

A good day for the club today, with 1st Grade working hard to repel Berkeley in the first half and then dominating the 2nd half, scoring 2 goals to win 2-0. A great response to the very disappointing last game. Congratulations to Coach Tim Hooker and Manager Dale Clayton and the team, on win No. 1.

Reserve Grade were gallant in losing 3-1 with the 2nd half performance providing encouraging signs.

Youth grade scored a comprehensive 7-0 win, with again a very strong 2nd half performance.
